How we teach science online: engaging virtual experiments

Science is about exploration, discovery, and hands-on learning — these principles hold true even in an online environment. Using innovative tools like simulations, virtual labs, and interactive field trips, we transform abstract concepts into engaging experiences. These methods empower students to experiment, observe, and apply scientific knowledge in meaningful ways.

How we bring science to life in the virtual classroom

1. Simulations

Simulations like PHET transform abstract scientific concepts into something tangible, allowing students to interact with diverse models. These simulations provide a visual and interactive representation of complex ideas, enhancing understanding and engagement in an online learning environment.  For instance, a student learning about electrical circuits can manipulate components in a virtual environment to see how changes affect the current and voltage.

They can also observe particles in static electricity and practice balancing equations. This hands-on interaction is invaluable in helping students grasp difficult concepts and apply them in practical situations. By engaging with simulations, students can experiment with variables, observe outcomes, and develop a deeper understanding of scientific principles, all within an online learning environment.

2. Virtual labs  

Virtual labs, like FOCUS, provide students with an invaluable opportunity to develop practical skills without needing physical equipment. As required practicals are an important aspect of all science curricula, it is essential that students can practice observing changes and collecting data using lab apparatus. These digital platforms simulate real-world experiments, allowing learners to conduct investigations, record data, and analyse results, all from the comfort of their homes.

For example, students can investigate the rate of transpiration using a virtual photometer or carry out an investigation into photosynthesis, a required practical in many curricula. By observing changes in these virtual experiments, students gain a deeper understanding of the impact of specific processes, such as photosynthesis, on a larger scale. This hands-on experience enhances learning and fosters a greater appreciation for scientific phenomena.

FOCUS contains all required practicals from the AQA, Edexcel, OCR, and WJEC curricula. Students collect data, then draw graphs in lessons to evaluate their results and write a conclusion.

3. Virtual field trips

Virtual field trips allow students to explore diverse regions globally from their homes. For example, our animal behaviours and conservation virtual trip lets students discover animal adaptations and endangered animal programmes on each continent, fostering awareness and understanding of conservation efforts and highlighting the importance of protecting biodiversity. Through virtual field trips, students can visit ecosystems, observe wildlife, and learn about environmental challenges.

These experiences broaden their perspectives and inspire a sense of responsibility towards the natural world. Virtual field trips are an engaging way to connect students with real-world issues and encourage them to think critically about the impact of human activities on the environment.

4. Home demos (teacher/students)

Teachers conduct demonstrations at home to introduce equipment and safe use. Depending on the activity, students can participate alongside, replicating the experiment in their own homes, further reinforcing learning through hands-on experience. Depending on the skill, students can participate at home, performing activities such as observing amylase’s effect on bread, understanding the lock and key theory or dissecting flowers alongside the teacher. Our teachers use imaginative methods to explain concepts, making science accessible and enjoyable. Home demonstrations empower students to explore scientific phenomena independently, fostering curiosity and a love for learning.

5. Video clips (carefully selected for RPs)

We carefully select video clips showing competent scientists conducting required practicals. Combined with any of the above, these clips provide students with a comprehensive understanding of experimental procedures and results, bridging the gap between theory and practice. By watching experts in action, students can bridge the gap between theory and practice, gaining insights into the scientific process. Video clips serve as a visual guide, helping students understand complex techniques and methodologies. They are an excellent addition to other online learning tools; for example, students can observe an expert investigating the rate of a chemical reaction and then collect data via a virtual lab.

Our approach to teaching science online proves that technology can break traditional limits, offering students opportunities to conduct experiments and explore concepts that might not be accessible in a physical classroom. Through simulations, virtual labs, and interactive demonstrations, students can experiment, observe, and analyse data just as they would in real life.
