In this episode Amy Husband chats with Neelam Barrotte, Deputy Head of Science, about teacher wellbeing in alternative provision.
In Episode 3 of the Alternative Provision podcast, host Amy is joined by Neelam Barrotte, Deputy Head of Science at Academy21, to explore the vital topic of teacher wellbeing within alternative provision (AP) settings. Drawing on Neelam’s extensive experience in both mainstream and AP environments, the conversation delves into the unique challenges and rewards of supporting students with complex educational and emotional needs.
Neelam shares practical strategies for fostering a supportive school ethos, including open-door policies, mentoring systems, and regular opportunities for staff to connect and reflect. The discussion highlights the importance of proactive wellbeing measures—such as mental health workshops, staff focus groups, and access to employee benefits like counselling and health support—to help educators manage the emotional demands of their roles.
The episode also examines the transition from classroom teaching to senior leadership, emphasising the need for vulnerability, open communication, and a culture where mistakes are seen as learning opportunities. Neelam’s top tips for wellbeing—prioritising self-care, leveraging support systems, and maintaining strong professional relationships—offer valuable takeaways for teachers and leaders alike.
